"The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict: A Case Study in Historical Contingency," with Ori Swed, Oct. 3, 2013 This lecture presents the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as a case study of historical contingency. This conflict draws considerable attention from the media and scholarship, but oftentimes, attempts to understand it fall into a rhetorical trap—a "war of narratives." Ori Swed will suggest an alternative point of view, one that explains the conflict by focusing on this "war of narratives" as a historical and social phenomenon, while avoiding debate on the validity of the narratives themselves. Ori Swed is a Ph.D. student in the sociology department at the University of Texas-Austin. Part of INSCT's Carol Becker Middle East Security Speaker Series.
