Tuesday April 5, 2016 the Aviation Division was requested by Towns County EMA to assist with the rescue of an injuried hiker on the Appalachian Trail. The location was a remote site on the trail 8 miles north east of Hiawassee, GA near the North Carolina line. An Aviation Crew consisting of CPT Mercier #20, SFC Rhodes #712, TFC Jones #143 and Officer Tyler Selvia from Cobb County PD responded to the scene in the Bell 429 helicopter equipted with a rescue hoist. The site of the rescue was on a ridge line at approximately 4,000 ft elevation. Officer Selvia was inserted through the trees with rescue equipment to package the victim. The victim was secured on a stretcher and hoisted into the helicopter. Once the victim was secure in the helicopter, Officer Selvia was hoisted into the helicopter. The victim was flown to an awaiting ambulance approximately five miles from the rescue site. #gsp
