Brinch's string quartet nr. 1 was composed between 1997 and 2001. The first movement explores both the rich and the more delicate sonorities of the strings in a mostly safe tonal environment. Stretching into increasing complexity and energy the movement concludes in an upbeat and uplifting manner. the 2nd and 4rth
movements are closely related and have similar musical material. the mood is threatening, and yet in the 2nd there is the possibility to witness the nature of this mood without it being directed at the listener. the tonality is accessible and yet not
strictly tonal nor atonal although both these are freely used. The 3rd movement seems to feed off the single fragile opening statement, which is repeated in the slow, pensive manner of an incantation. The percussive finale is a gritty, insistent
piece, which stays away from the rather soft sonorities of the opening of the work except for a few melancholy passages. It does not resolve the threat created in the 2nd movement but rather perpetuates it and so confirms an overall tension in the
work stretched between more accessible harmonious passages and the relentless use of piercing dissonances.
